What is the story behind the Biblio-mat?
I went fishing this past summer with Craig Small, co-founder of The Juggernaut, an animation studio in Toronto. I had this idea that I would love to have a vending machine that gave out random books. I pictured it as a painted refrigerator box with one of my assistants inside; people would put in a coin and he would drop a book out. But Craig is more pragmatic and visionary then I am. He said, “You need to have an actual mechanical vending machine.” That was beyond my wildest imaginings, but not Craig’s, so he just built it for me.
…
What books are stocked in the Biblio-mat?The books in the machine are two dollars each — that’s not enough to make any profit, but the nature of the second-hand book business is that I end up with a lot of books that are interesting and worth keeping and disseminating, but have no practical retail value. Historically in the used books trade there has always been the dollar cart in front of the store. This is just a spin on that.

A random used-book vending machine. I think I am in love.

The innovative bed tent that lets you let it all hang out, no matter where you are. A Privacy Pop tent gives you the coverage and privacy that you want, so that you can enjoy a place all your own, even in a dorm room or room shared with other.
College students and siblings who have shared their bedrooms for years are buzzing about this new product that carves out a closed off space just for you.
A Privacy Pop tent is perfect for:
Keeping bright sun out of your eyes so you can sleep
Listening to your iPod or reading without bothering anyone else in the room
The perfect place for studying without being bothered or bothering anyone else
Ensuring you have privacy from prying eyes

This…like…literally zips all around you?
I need this. I am SO stressed and full of anxiety about spiders crawling over me after my big run in with that huge bigger than your palm spider on my pillow that one night.

i would give anything for this

An innovative initiative is taking place in the Philippines to bring sustainable lighting to homes in impoverished communities. Empty plastic bottles are installed in the roof, filled with water and bleach they refract sunlight. These “solar light bulbs” provide light equivalent to a 55watt light bulb.

See how they’re made here. From Visual News

also known as Lofted Bedrooms, check these out, and a few other cool bedroom designs. I’m already drawing up a design to have one done for my house in the Philippines.

I would like to live in literally every one of these, please.

Yes please.

I wonder how much it would cost to make a room like that.

Seems like IKEA are really shaking things up this year. In addition to the previously announced TV set, they’re also going to release a digital camera made of cardboard called Knäppa (“Snap”). It’ll hold 40 photographs at a time and plugs directly into your USB port. While it’s not the prettiest camera the world has ever seen, I do love the idea of a screen-less digital camera that brings people back to the wait-and-see days of film.

Ooooh, I’ll invest in one. And since it’s Ikea, I assume it’s going to be cheap~

Two More Elements Added to The Periodic Table
You can now greet by name two new residents of the period table of elements: Flerovium and Livermorium.
The International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry officially approved names for the elements — which sit at slot 114 and 116, respectively — on 31 May. They have until now gone by the temporary monikers ununquadium and ununhexium.

Welp, better update cho’ periodic tables

this is going to throw off all my memorization songs.

How exciting! :D

Omg omg omg this is amazing I am so excited omg.

I literally started jumping around and clapping when I saw this. My mom facepalmed at how geeky I am.

This guy hand-forged his own wedding ring. OUT OF A METEORITE.

That’s it. Game over. You will never have a wedding ring cooler than that of redditor laporkenstein. Not only did he fashion the band himself, in the formidable fires of… well… his garage — he forged the damn thing out of a chunk of meteorite. (A Gibeon meteorite, to be exact.) Laporkenstein… you, sir, are a DIY luminary.

All told, laporkenstein says it took him about four days to craft the ring, using “the same techniques employed to make samurai swords” (by which, we assume, he means the layered metalworking techniques similar to those used in the production of Damascus steel). We’ve picked out a few examples from his series of over 40 pictures documenting the forging process, but you’ll definitely want to check out the entire album over on imgur.
